UFC 220 video recap: Stipe Miocic makes history with dominant win over Francis Ngannou

Get the Full StoryStipe Miocic becomes the longest-reigning UFC heavyweight champion by defeating Francis Ngannou via a dominant unanimous decision verdict. UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic entered his third title defense against Francis Ngannout at UFC 220 as the underdog. But after all is said and done, it was the Ohio native who came out victorious to keep both heavyweight title and the right to be branded as the Baddest Man on the Planet.

What was the high point of the fight?

Similar to Oezdemir, Ngannou was riding on his past highlight reel finishes entering the fight, particularly with his recent knockout win over Alistair Overeem at UFC 218 last December. His punching power was indeed evident when he gave Miocic a mouse under the right eye when one of his heavy hands connected.

However, it was Miocic who fought the smarter fight by taking the fight to the ground and wearing out Ngannou in the clinch. He did show some signs of fatigue in the final round, but he was able to get the job done and become the longest-reigning heavyweight champion in UFC history with his third successful title defense.

Where do these two go from here?

Ngannou s quick rise to the top of the heavyweight ladder was indeed warranted, but his lack of experience against a seasoned fighter like Miocic was evident in this fight. I d say give him someone in the top five where he can make the necessary tweaks and still face high-level competition.

While a rematch against Fabricio Werdum was put forward as a possibility for Miocic s next fight, I am more intent on seeing the champion defend his title against Cain Velasquez. Assuming that Velasquez has already been able to recover fully after a long layoff and get himself back in his championship shape, this should be an interesting matchup to watch.

Watch it now, later, or never?

This was a fun fight to watch, especially in the first few rounds. I would recommend watching it now if you haven t seen it yet.
