Chris Evans Says Captain Marvel And Black Widow Will Be As Big As Black Panther

Get the Full StoryRyan Coogler’s Black Panther is currently the talk of the town, and for good reason. After posting historic numbers during its opening weekend – 192 million, in case you hadn’t heard – and achieving an A CinemaScore as well as being rated 97 on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, it’s without a doubt one of the most successful and beloved films to come out of Hollywood in a while.

Of course, given that it’s a product of Marvel Studios, it’s not like anyone expected it to flop. For years now, the House of Ideas has been pumping out one hit after another, bringing to cinemas what’s been among the most lucrative and consistently entertaining franchises of all-time. But after the incredible heights that Black Panther hit, can they possibly recreate that success with their future efforts? Well, according to Chris Evans, yes, they definitely can.

Speaking to ET Canada this week, the Captain America star was asked for his thoughts on the recent spinoff and noted that he believes both Captain Marvel and the Black Widow solo movie will have a similar impact to what Black Panther is seeing right now.

“There s nothing they can t do man. I m sure its going to have the exact same effect when Captain Marvel comes out and when the Black Widow movie comes out. Marvel just has the winning recipe, and they re kind of one step ahead of everybody else.”

Continuing on, he said:

“I mean just looking at them, and I was just looking at things this morning about these Black Panther openings around the country this weekend and its gonna crush. Its gonna crush! Marvel knows what they re doing. They find great people. I just feel very humbled and lucky to be part of it.”

Though it’s great to hear Evans’ enthusiasm, we do have a bit of a tough time believing that either of the films he mentioned will have the same impact as T’Challa’s first standalone outing. I mean, the box office business it’s doing and the level of buzz and hype surrounding it is absolutely unprecedented.

This isn’t Avengers: Infinity War we’re talking about. This is a film featuring what was a B, maybe even C-list comic book character for many years and who was only really introduced – briefly – to audiences in 2016. Before then, most moviegoers probably had no idea who he was. So, to have his first solo effort be this big and impact pop culture this significantly, well, once again, it’s unprecedented and we likely won’t see this type of thing happen again for quite a while.

Still, we’ve no doubt that Captain Marvel and the Black Widow pic will both be excellent films and though they may not soar quite as high as Black Panther, we’re certainly expecting great things from both. After all, like Evans says, Marvel “just has the winning recipe.”
