I'm Sorry Topanga, But Cory Is Actually A Terrible Boyfriend

Get the Full StoryAnd a bad person in general, tbh.

Hi. Hey. Hello. You're familiar with Boy Meets World, right? Of course you are.

ABC

I mean, it's kinda hard not to be. Spanning seven seasons, the '90s TV classic followed the daily life of the Matthews family, with none other than Cory Matthews as the main character.

ABC

And when you think of Cory, you undoubtedly think of Ms. Topanga Lawrence. Cory's lifelong friend, girlfriend, fianc , wife y'know, the couple we were all rooting for to come out on top. I mean, we were all rooting for them, right...?

ABC

WRONG. After rewatching all seven seasons on Hulu, I've come to this conclusion: Cory Matthews is a shit boyfriend, and a pretty crappy person in general.

ABC

Now, don't get me wrong, I love this show, but if I could corner Topanga and tell her to dump Cory's wannabe ass, I would.

ABC

He's always been a little shit toward the authoritative figures in his life.

Cory has a proven track record of being extremely disrespectful to just about any adult in his life. If he's not deliberately ignoring Mr. Turner in class, he's bitching to his parents because they grounded him for not filling up the car with gas. Because his parents and Mr. Feeny give him just about anything he wants in life, you'd think he'd have a little more respect or them. But nope.

ABC

He expects everything to be done for him, instead of actually putting in the work to earn it.

When Cory and Topanga got married, he was completely blindsided with the things that come with adulthood. And when his parents wouldn't lend him a penny toward a new life, or let them live in their house, he became angry, degrading, and downright rude. Even when his dad told him doing this on his own was for his own good, he still tried to play victim. NOT COOL, CORY.

ABC

Oh, and don't even get me STARTED on his infidelity.

Cory is a CHEATER. He literally cheated on Topanga, lied about it, then blamed Topanga for "pushing him toward Lauren," which is a complete copout.

ABC

And when he isn't cheating on Topanga, he's lying to her about NOT cheating.

Typical. Remember when he said he was just going to hang out with Shawn at his house, but then went out to another school's party and danced with other girls? Or when he went to another party, kissed another girl, and told Topanga nothing happened. Sure, he admitted to it after the fact, but he still lied.

ABC

He also never really gave two shits about Topanga's hopes and aspirations because he was borderline obsessed with Shawn.

All throughout high school, Topanga's main goal was to get into Yale. When she made the waitlist, she was clearly devastated. But did Cory notice? Nope. He was too focused on what was happening in Shawn's life. And when Topanga FINALLY got his attention, his response was, "Wait, what are you talking about?" Nice one, Cor.

ABC

Did I mention his lack of respect toward adults? He is pretty much ALWAYS treating his parents like garbage.

If getting upset with his parents for forcing him to figure things out on his own because it's what's best for him wasn't enough, he literally PUSHED his own father down because he couldn't play another game of basketball with him. And let's not forget when he was constantly screaming at his mom when Topanga came back from Pittsburgh.

ABC

He's not exactly an easy sibling to get along with, either.

Sure, Eric wasn't exactly easy to deal with, but Cory did nothing to help the situation, either. When Eric was moving out for college, Cory felt left behind and retaliated by way of arguing over a damn baseball. A BASEBALL. A few fist fights later, Cory still didn't put forth any effort and chose to leave him out of cleaning his parents' garage, full of their memories. Instead, he enlists Topanga and Shawn to help him. Tisk, tisk.

ABC

He goes on as if Mr. Feeny's sole purpose in life is to be there just for him.

Mr. Feeny has a lot on his plate. He's a teacher to like, hundreds of kids, and eventually finds love. But does Cory see that? Nope, he expects Mr. Feeny to be as his beck and call, regardless of the day, time, or place. Once he's in trouble or in a sticky situation and it's quite often , he instantly calls Mr. Feeny to help him out. I mean, a simple thank you would go a long way.

ABC

He's constantly unaware of his privilege.

Cory lives and comes from a life of leisure. His parents give him everything he wants, and he never had anything serious to worry about when he was growing up. That isn't the case for everyone else, especially Shawn. And when Shawn acted out because he had a rough upbringing, Cory sees it as unfamiliar and rejects it. Instead, he attempts to reprimand him for his "bad behavior," when he doesn't even bother to see the root of the problem. But hey, they're best friends, right?

ABC

And finally, just when you think enough people have told him to knock it off, he reverts back to his old ways. Always.

You'd think after Shawn yelling at Cory in public for reading his private poems in public, Cory would learn. But nope, he's still the same Cory. His friends and family can tell him to KNOCK. IT. OFF. and mind his own business so many times, but in the end, this gif accurately represents what he'll do in the end.

ABC

Basically, Cory is a pretty trash person and how he got away with so much is beyond me. Now, please enjoy this gif of Cory acting v smug, which is what he'd be doing if he read this.
