UFC Austin bonuses: Millender courteously smashes Alves in POTN win

Get the Full StoryCheck out our breakdown of the post-fight bonuses from UFC Fight Night: Cerrone vs. Medeiros in Austin, Texas. The Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas was home to a fun if poorly paced night of fights. The card saw five T KOs, three submissions and four decisions. The event got off to a rapid start, with the opening two bouts lasting a combined four minutes and six seconds, and the entire four fight FS1 prelim card consisting of a whole 21 minutes and 36 seconds of fight time. Unfortunately, that meant we only got 25 minutes of fighting in the first three hours of the broadcast.

If you ve ever seen Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, UFC Austin would have felt very familiar to you. Carlos Diego Ferreira played the role of Cock-Knocker and blasted Jared Gordon in the nuts with two inside leg kicks. Later in the show, Bluntman showed up to save the day, as Nate Diaz appeared on camera with a big ole spliff, forcing the UFC production truck to cut away from him as he was about to light up.

Performances of the Night: Derrick Lewis and Curtis Millender

Derrick Lewis went into Black Beast-mode against Marcin Tybura in the last round of tonight s co-main event. Tybura arguably won the first two rounds by taking Lewis down and landing solid ground-and-pound for significant portions of each round. Then, in the third round, the Hound of the Basketcasevilles went loco, stuffing Tybura s takedown attempts and smashing him with a series of brutal shots that left Tybura needing a doctor Watson . Lewis got a cool 50K for his finish.

Curtis Millender absolutely dominated former title contender Thiago Alves in a manner that would have been unthinkable in Wait, Alves fought GSP nearly a decade ago? I m getting old. So is Thiago Alves. Curtis Millender, on the other hand, is getting paid for finishing Alves with a huge knee after a solid nine minutes of attrition. Millender walked away 50,000 richer for his demolition job.

Fight of the Night: Peterson vs. Davis

The last exchange of this fight sums up exactly why it deserved fight of the night honors: Brandon Davis landed a head kick and a hard elbow, followed by a flying knee and superman punch from Steven Peterson. While Davis ultimately took a comfortable decision, the back-and-forth action of this fight made it one of the highlights of the night, despite being one of just four fights to go to a decision. It s not easy to make a decision more enjoyable to watch than a finish, but these guys managed it and they both walked away with and extra 50 Gs for their trouble.
