Game Of Thrones Just Broke Several Emmy Nomination Records
Get the Full StoryThe 71st Primetime Emmy nominations were announced today, and a celebratory screech rang out from the fire-filled mouths of all the dragons of the uh the Shire? The place where Link from The Legend of Zelda lives? Okay, so I ve never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones. But Game of Thrones now holds multiple Emmy nomination records. HA! Take that, you angry nerds! thought the creators of Game of Thrones.Deadline says the nominations were announced this morning by Ken Jeong and D Arcy Carden, neither of which were nominated for anything. Awkward! But not anywhere near as awkward as having to say the words Game of Thrones 32 times at the crack of dawn. Game of Thrones eighth and final season has broken the record for the most single-year nominations, beating NYPD Blue s record from 1994, which was 27 nominations. It s also the record holder for the drama series with the most overall nominations for a drama series, with 161 nominations. Game of Thrones is now the drama series with the most nominations in its final year beating the final season of Breaking Bad . It also holds the record for the drama series with the most Emmy wins, at 47 awards, and most wins in a single year, at 12 wins. So it could potentially break those records too.
HBO, which airs Game of Thrones, also broke an Emmy nomination record today, with most single-year nominations 137 .
Even though it sounds like we ll be hearing And the winner is you already know a lot when the Primetime Emmy Awards are given out on September 22, other people and shows were nominated. It s too bad Blouse Barn has closed, because Catherine O Hara needs to find a nice dress to wear to the Emmy s. Schitt s Creek was nominated for four awards, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Catherine, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Eugene Levy. Last year s winner for Outstanding Competition Program, RuPaul s Drag Race, was nominated again, as was RuPaul for Outstanding Reality Host. And Amazon Prime s Fleabag received 11 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Phoebe Waller-Bridge. And yet, no nominations for that jumpsuit? That jumpsuit was robbed.
Speaking of more snubs, Julia Roberts got nothing for Homecoming. Richard Madden, who won a Golden Globe award for Bodyguard back in January, also didn t hear his name read today. Once again, Modern Family was shut out of the Outstanding Comedy Series category. And Jonah Hill didn t get a nomination for looking like a warm beer-chugging Tampa, Florida dirtbag in the Netflix series Maniac. But I m sure he ll take home all the trophies if there s an award show recognizes achievement in dirtbaggery.
